Welcome boys, girls, not boys, not girls, whatever you are, welcome to the Awards I'm Giving Out To Games Show! (Thank you pantoozler) The readers of my reviews have answered and we have named these the Mega Epic Awards. Thank you to the 3 people for the epic suggestions. Note: I added something last minute and there are a few special awards I would like to give at the end. FUN! There will also be a worst of 2020 list so do not fret. Also, I have to disqualify Rayman Legends, because everyone knows it will just win GOTY no matter what. ANYWAY let's get started!
7. Superhot: Mind Control Delete (2020)
Superhot MCD, technically the third game in the series, really flew under the radar this year. It came out in July, which was when Ghost of Tsushima and Paper Mario and the Origami King were released, so it was pretty unfair. Superhot MCD is quite fun, and it builds pretty well onto the original superhot. Slicing bullets with a katana now deflects them back at enemies, levels are now random generated, which kind of sucks. The new mechanic with the cores are really cool, though. You can dash up to an enemy and punch them, or throw a katana and have it come back to you, slicing through baddies on its way; It really steps up in difficulty, and in my opinion, makes it better. The main theme of the game is Greed, and people wanting MORE superhot, which is very ironic considering almost nobody talked about it on release. Superhot: Mind Control Delete was SUPER. HOT. Of course.
6. Nioh 2 (2020)
Nioh 2 played great. The original had a fun idea with low, medium, and high stances, all being different types of attacks for the however many weapons there are, different abilities to use with every weapon, magic to buff you and debuff your opponent, ninjutsu to give status effects to yourself and enemy, and just a TON of very complex mechanics. Nioh 2 adds a few new moves, new weapons, and more bosses to die to. What's great is that it started as what I thought was a soulslike game, but very quickly turned into its own series with its own ideas. I won't say much about the game, other than that it's better than Nioh 1, and I would say it is harder. Very good game, released in March with the big boys I think, i-it's good. That's all.
5. Dark Souls 3 (2017)
I owe my identity as a gamer to Dark Souls. The series itself, not DS1. It's the game apart from Spider-man that was one of the REAL games I beat, no offense to LEGO Indiana Jones. Out of the Dark Souls games, I have to say that I like 3 the most. DS3 was released in 2017 and really just works. The combat is a lot smoother than the others, the areas are very gothic and old-looking. The bosses are pretty consistently not too much of a challenge until you hit the nameless king, and the DLC is super good. Ashes of Ariandel was a nice contrast from the not blue areas, and The Ringed City was a great apocalyptic setting for a true final battle against a powerful enemy. Dark Souls 3 is consistently good throughout most of the game, while for me DS1 was terrible in the later parts of the game. So DS3 is amazing and everyone who loves fighting bosses should play it.
4. Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019)
Now, I would put the newer RE3 remake where this is, but it was way shorter compared to Resident Evil 2 Remake. I just have to say, THIS IS A MASTERPIECE OF ZOMBIE HORROR. Each area exudes a creepy feeling of not being alone without explicitly placing zombies in every hallway, and perfectly balances suspense and action. The bosses have really grotesque designs, but the graphics really enhance the disgusting pus-filled eyes and all that crap. I have not played the original as of yet, but RE2 got me into the series, and it's now one of my favorite game series. Thank you Capcom for going back to fully remake this game rather than just putting it in HD with tank controls. All in all, Resident Evil 2 Remake is a MASTAPEECE.
3. Sonic Mania (2017)
When I was a little baby kid in first grade, I got an xbox 360 for some occasion, and it came with some racing game and Sonic Generations. The real story is that I stayed up ALL NIGHT playing sonic, and fell asleep in class the next day. In first grade. Sonic quickly became my favorite character in pop culture and I even watched the old cartoons and stuff. Years later, I was disappointed by Sonic Lost World when I played it on the Wii U. Now that I have a true conscience, money, and a good console, I can safely say that Sonic Mania is one of the best games ever made. Each level is crafted with its own theme, each act with its own song, and the music is magnificent. Old zones like the iconic Green Hill Zone is a great sight for sore eyes, and new levels like Studiopolis Zone shows hope for the future of Sonic. If Sonic Forces didn't exist. Sega, please bring back the guys who made mania. Please. I highly recommend Sonic Mania to people who like video games, and play it for yourself. You'll like it I promise.
2. Doom Eternal (2020)
For one of the newer games I played this year, Doom Eternal feels like how I think Bioshock would be on lots of hardcore drugs. Doom 2016 already felt like super fast demon killing at 300 miles an hour, and I'm very surprised that Eternal managed to amplify its pace by that much, and made an actually really good sequel. In my opinion, Eternal is 2x better than Doom 2016. The story isn't the most inventive, but it executes it well. Missions are a lot longer than in the previous Doom, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. Seeing chunks of gore blown off demons is super metal and hardcore, which is a lot better than them just dying. New additions to the combat like the flame belch fit in perfectly, and the final boss is super sick. Doom Eternal may be pricey, but it is 200% worth every penny.
1. And the Game of the Year goes to............... Persona 5 (2017)!!!
Persona 5 was recommended to me by my best friend, and I have to give a big thank you to Lliam. Persona 5 is without a doubt, the best game I have ever played, below Rayman Legends of course. P5 follows the Phantom Thieves and the iconic leader, Joker. Not from batman. (I know it's technically DC comics but whatever.) The gameplay of P5 is split into one half life simulator, and the other half turn-based JRPG combat, which is now one of my favorite types of combat. The life simulator gameplay takes place in Tokyo, Japan, which is pretty cool. Not too imaginative, but done well. The locations feel very fitting for the theme of blending in with society and the importance of individuality. The Social Links, called Confidants in p5, have overall pretty decent stories and really good abilities to unlock for the combat sections. The combat is well done, and the battle menu looks VERY stylish. Each ability can be used often, and doesn't necessarily take away from the game. The music of the game is the BIG thing I need to talk about. Persona 5 has a really, really good ost that JUST TODAY got added to spotify and apple music. I'm glad, but should've been on there sooner. Listen to the soundtrack, and you'll see why I'm giving it this much praise. Persona became my favorite game series because of this game.
