The main story of shovel knight is a pretty basic knight saving the world story, but the writing separates this from a sea of throwaway indie games (no offense). The characters are pretty funny, the bottle minigame is pretty fun, and there is an NPC that is a giant fish named Troupple King. Best character. The controls are very tight and precise, the platforming is very well done, and the water level sucks. So far, good game. The deciding factor is not just Troupple King, however. Shovel Knight has 3 separate DLCs that are basically standalone games. Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment, and King of Cards are really solid games, and the mechanics are different in each one. Basically, this is a four game deal. And all of them are really good. In conclusion, Shovel Knight has tight controls, funny NPCs, Troupple King, and 4 whole DLC games with it. Also, SK is on pretty much every console. 4 shovels out of 5, I hate that water level.
